IGG Freedom Model Part 2: Work from Anywhere

IGG Avadhut

In the past, working was often confined to a physical location (offices), limiting people’s freedom to choose what they wanted and live free of external patronage and control.

Today? Working is a different ballgame altogether—no matter what career you are in, you can work from anywhere and still live your life to the fullest.

In fact, according to recent studies, on average, those who work from home spend 10 minutes less a day being unproductive, work one more day a week, and are 47% more productive.

So what does this all mean?

As the world discovers alternative ways to work without human contact, the work-from-anywhere force is getting a facelift.

Further reports published by Upwork predict that by 2025, 22% of the American workforce will be working remotely.

The work-from-anywhere culture has emerged as a widespread practice in the modern workplace, with a growing number of companies effectively adopting and implementing the concept.

That’s why, globally, 16% of companies are fully remote, according to an Owl Labs study.

Finance and business careers are not left out of this breakthrough—in fact, they stand to benefit even more compared to the rest.

But is work-from-anywhere something for you?

IGG Freedom Model Part 2: Work from Anywhere is the second guide on IGG Freedom Model Part 1 and its purpose is to cover the work from anywhere aspect of the working options.

I have covered the IGG Freedom model in these guides, which you can refer to after reading this article:

In this article, I’ll take you through the essentials, benefits, challenges, and resources you need and break down the question, “How do I know that work-from-anywhere is for me?”.

Let’s get started.

IGG Freedom Model Part 2: Work from Anywhere -Meaning

Work-from-anywhere is a modern work arrangement that allows individuals to perform their job duties from any location without being tied to a traditional office space.

It is a flexible approach to work that embraces remote work, digital nomadism, and the use of technology to stay connected and productive.

Work-from-anywhere doesn’t require you to own a home or be tied down to fixed assets or liabilities. It’s about having the freedom to work from any location without limitations.

IGG Freedom Model Part 2

Contrary to popular belief, working from anywhere doesn’t necessarily mean becoming a full-time traveler and globe-trotting around the world (although that’s always an exciting option).

There’s no limit to how much you can travel in a lifetime while embracing the work-from-anywhere life. It’s about having the flexibility to choose where you work and how you structure your life, without being confined to a specific place.

#2 IGG Freedom Model: Work from Anywhere- Finance and Business Careers

As I said earlier, among the top careers benefiting from the work-from-anywhere scheme, finance and business careers are at the top of the list.

Let me put it this way: you can work for any company anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world today.

In this section, I’ll dissect this question to help you understand the various careers in finance and business and how the work-from-anywhere concept applies to them.

On top of that, I’ll delve into how you can break into this space (if you haven’t) and how to manage your luster in any environment and grow to be an asset.

Let’s have a closer look.

Overview of finance and business careers

Financial roles can be found in just about any industry. They include job titles such as accountant, financial analyst, financial manager, personal financial advisor, investment banker, and budget analyst.

Note: If you’re aspiring to pursue any of the following roles, I’ll leave links to my other articles and courses that can guide and mentor you in pursuing them.

Let’s break them down.

#1. Accountant

As an accountant, you’re responsible for collecting and analyzing financial data for companies or individuals. In this role, you can work for any business that has cash flow, such as nonprofits and small local businesses; however, the most common include banks and large corporations.

#2. Budget analyst

As a budget analyst, your job is to help companies, organizations, and governmental agencies organize and plan their finances. In this role, you can work for private companies and nonprofits, the public sector, and government agencies.

#3. Financial analyst

If you’re a financial analyst, fund manager, or financial risk specialist, you help businesses and individuals increase their profits through investments by keeping your eye on the stock market. In this role, you can work as an independent contractor or for a financial firm or agency.

#4. Financial Manager

As a financial manager, you take on responsibility for a company’s financial health. This involves developing, implementing, and overseeing financial strategies for your company. This, therefore, means you can work in any industry.

#5. Investment Banker

If you’re an investment banker, you serve as a financial advisor to corporations, private individuals, governments, and other clients. This role involves helping your clients make large and informed financial decisions such as purchasing, consolidating, and merging with other companies.

#6. Personal Financial Advisor

Just like the name suggests, personal financial advisors help individuals make the best financial choices for their current and future needs. If you find yourself here, your role is to review finances and budgets to set financial goals.

How the concept of “Work from Anywhere” applies to finance and business careers

Fast forward: finance and business careers are pretty flexible. This means you don’t have to be in a physical location to perform a specific task, thanks to evolving technology.

For example, as a digital entrepreneur in my business for over a decade now, since 2007, with over 10 staff from different time zones and regions, I do not have an office, but I’m able to track the performance of every individual’s tasks and have meetings with them using tools like Slack and Zoom.

Work from anywhere zoom meetings

I am one of the early adopters of the work-from-anywhere revolution, and all around the world, more and more employers are embracing flexible schedules for their remote teams, leading to new remote work trends and work options.

The same is true for finance and business careers.

In an increasingly remote and digital environment, automation is quickly becoming a reality for finance firms.

Finance firms are now leveraging these new processes to shift workforce capacity from transactional work to strategic work that delivers net new value to the business.

Let’s use accounting to put this matter into perspective.

In this role, the fact is that a majority of accounting work can be done remotely with the right enablers in place.

Work from home finance careers

For example, business firms can move to 100% electronic invoicing and cashless payment to cut out the need to be in the office to scan snail mail and send checks.

So, is working from anywhere possible in a finance or business career? Absolutely.

However, if you’re new to this type of working environment, there are things you need to know before trying your hand at it.

It is about your mindset and attitude—this is what will set you apart.

Let’s be upfront, working from anywhere in finance and business careers is difficult to adapt to, but not impossible for those who value their lives more than accepted patterns.

Gone are the days when you needed to have a physical job in the finance industry to consider yourself successful.

I’m not discrediting the role physical or one-on-one jobs can have; I’m simply saying the world is moving into remote jobs, and those who are prepared will have a greater advantage over traditional mindsets.

So, if you’re relying on traditional jobs only to create income, it’s time you find an alternative in the work-from-anywhere space.

To put this into perspective, let’s look at the benefits that come with working from anywhere in the next section.

Benefits of Working from Anywhere in The Finance and Business Careers

You can start working from anywhere at any point in your life—provided you have the necessary skills and, most importantly, set your mind to pursuing it (more about this later).

Remote work benefits

What are the benefits of working from anywhere? I’ll use Rony (a good colleague of mine) to explain this.

Imagine Rony, a talented investment banker stuck in a traditional office job. He faces:

  • Long commutes
  • Rigid schedules
  • Lack of autonomy
  • Frequent office politics
  • Limited work-life balance
  • Limited geographical reach

Rony feels restricted by the conventional work environment, longing for a change that allows him more freedom and flexibility.

As an employee, it’s essential to recognize these challenges and explore alternative work models that prioritize flexibility, well-being, and productivity to create a more fulfilling and successful work environment.

Unlike the conventional work environment, the shift towards working from anywhere empowers professionals like Rony to redefine their work experiences.

Whether it’s working from a tropical beach,a lush green meadow or a cozy home office, the benefits are undeniable.

Let’s take a closer look at them in the following dimension.

1.Career and Wealth

work from anywhere career benefits

1.1. Remote workers save time, money, and energy

Whether it takes 5 minutes to drive to work or 1 hour, it saves valuable time, irreplaceable energy, and resourceful money when working from anywhere and not necessarily in the office.

For example, if you’re working from home, you can start your workday earlier because you don’t have to drive to work.

According to a report by Airtasker, on average, you can save 9 hours a week and 408 hours a year of free time by not commuting to work.

On top of saving time, you can also save on transportation costs by not commuting to work daily, skipping lunch, and having to dry-clean work clothes.

A study by FlexJobs estimates that people who work from home save, on average, $6,000 or more a year.

Isn’t that a better way to build your own wealth?

1.2. Reduced office conflicts

Human beings are social beings—a trait that sets us apart. However, it comes with a cost—especially in a crowded office.

Traditional work environments may be plagued by office politics, power dynamics, and hierarchical structures, which often lead to conflicts of interest.

Working from a comfy Airbnb on a tropical beach, mountains, or hills? Autonomy of thought, flexibility, and fewer conflicts—because you’re alone.

This is a big boost to your career.

On top of that, you can pursue multiple freelancing projects at once to get extra money for a trip to the Maldives in December.

For example, it is possible to handle three freelancing projects a day, all of which pay handsomely.

Here is a breakdown:

work from anywhere a day in life

Sounds good? Yes, it’s possible if you’re determined to. You’ll realize that you have taken complete control of your life, career, and wealth.

Let’s find out about the other benefits of working from anywhere.

2.Health and Well-being

work from anywhere health benefits

2.1. Positive impacts on your health

It’s a fact that the work environment has a direct impact on your mental and emotional health as well as your general well-being.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), negative and stressful work environments are associated with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

Poor working environments in traditional work settings include discrimination and inequality, excessive workloads, low job control, and job insecurity.

But working from home (and probably with autonomy)? No such thing can happen.

Globally, an estimated 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety, which totals a cost of U.S. $ 1 trillion per year in lost productivity.

This can loosely be translated to mean that working from anywhere can help you overcome work environment stress and improve your health and well-being.

Working from anywhere allows you to have flexibility in your workday and is overwhelmingly listed as the top way to promote your health and well-being.

2.2. Working from anywhere is environmentally friendly

In the wake of pollution and climate change, working remotely is the perfect choice to contribute to environmental sustainability.

For instance, it’s estimated that if 3.9 million employees work from home at least half the time, they will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of taking more than 600,000 cars off the road for an entire year.

Let’s say you’re an accountant. You can use less paper to print invoices and instead send them digitally. You can also monitor air-conditioning, heating, and lighting, which could otherwise have a negative impact on others’ environments.

On top of that, driving to work every day and getting stuck in a traffic jam exposes you to fumes, which have a negative impact on your health.

However, working in nature or places close to nature reduces risks related to the aforementioned health challenge.

That’s the meaning of the perfect life. In for it? Let’s move to the next section.

3.Relationships and Connections

work from anywhere benefits in relationships and connections

3.1. Working from anywhere has benefits for your work-life balance

Traditional work environments often prioritize long working hours and may not adequately support employee well-being or provide opportunities for a healthy work-life balance.

This often has a negative impact on your work-life balance. And with that, you have limited time for your family and yourself—causing disintegration with your family.

How is it different when working remotely?

Working from anywhere gives you the opportunity to achieve a life-work balance. You live a fulfilling and happy life, and you work enough to live a happy life.

3.2. Working from anywhere enables you to plan your time well

You have the autonomy to plan your time, when to meet your family, friends or new connections, and have a great time with them.

For example, if you’re working for a financial firm in a different time zone, you can adjust your schedule to spend time with your family when you’re not working. You can plan a trekking where working from the mountains, can meet and connect with different people.

What will excite you, even more, is having your own location independence.

3.3. Working from anywhere give you location independence

Working remotely gives people more options for where they live, reducing the necessity of living near large metropolitan city centers that are often characterized by noise and lifestyle pressure.

For example, if you get hired as a hedge fund manager at a bank or firm in another city, you don’t have to move there—as it comes with the hassle of looking for a new apartment, a new school for kids, and so on.

3.4. Working from anywhere gives you a chance to create collaborations

Finally, working from anywhere opens up opportunities for collaboration and engagement with individuals or clients in different locations, as you’re not confined to a physical area at all times.

For instance, I have written so many emails and responded to messages from clients while on cabs, trains, and flights moving to different locations for different purposes.

If I have been able to manage this, why can’t you?

3.Productivity and Evolution

work from anywhere benefits in productivity and evolution

Last but not least, working remotely has tons of benefits for your productivity as compared to conventional working environments.

Data from various studies show that businesses lose $600 billion a year to workplace distractions and that remote workers are 35-40% more productive than their in-office counterparts.

Here are some common reasons why working from anywhere increases productivity:

  • Fewer interruptions
  • Quieter work environment
  • More comfortable workplace
  • More focused time
  • Avoiding office politics

If you spice up your work from anywhere with modern technologies and digital tools, you can spark efficiency and innovation, which are vital ingredients in productivity.

For example, long before accountants had to physically present forms for signing by respective managers, today they can be signed and transferred using digital tools.

Challenges of Working from Anywhere in Finance and Business Careers

challenges of working from anywhere

Challenges are everywhere. When we face them, they’re supposed to strengthen us to face bigger tasks.

In this section, I’m going to share my experience with some of the challenges you can face when working from anywhere, remotely, or, better yet, as a digital nomad.

#1. Difficulty in maintaining a life-work balance

Once you set your mind to start working remotely, you may struggle to find a true life-work balance. Especially if you get excited about the multiple opportunities to earn from different sources.

As a solution, try crafting the daily schedule that suits you best—and ensure you have enough time for yourself. On top of that, you can decide to get into related roles so that you don’t have to deal with two extreme fields that may bore you.

You can choose to work certain hours, days of the week, or seasons of the year. To decide on your schedules, here are some of the things you can consider:

  • How often do you start new projects?
  • How strict are your deadlines?
  • What timezone are you working in or from?
  • What is the work policy in your company?
  • How long does it take you to finish a project?
  • Are you a morning person or a night person?

#2. Choosing suitable locations to travel

Traveling is synonymous with digital nomads. However, finding the right destinations that have favorable working conditions can be a hassle.

Why do you need a good destination? Roles in finance and business require discipline in meeting deadlines, for example. Imagine you just moved to a new destination and found there was no reliable internet. What does that mean for the work you’re supposed to handle?

Here are some things you can consider when finding the right destination for your travel and work.

  • Logistics
  • Cost of living
  • Accommodation
  • Availability of coworking spaces
  • Internet and other infrastructure

While this is a challenge for most beginners to this new life of working, experienced nomads find it easy to navigate because they’re used to traveling and therefore know which location is best for which kind of life.

#3. Lack of social life and emotional support

Human beings are social beings; they need to network, engage, and interact with other people to live a fulfilled life.

As a beginner, you’ll soon feel a sense of isolation and loneliness because you’re working alone.

Imagine working on that financial model, handling invoices, and watching interviews to determine the state of the economy so that you can advise your clients efficiently—nobody to talk to in between breaks.

It can make you feel empty, right? This challenge cuts across every person working remotely.

But modern technology can help. For example, you can take advantage of various networks of people working remotely and organize fun meetings.

Alternatively, you can occasionally join a local gym and make friends who you can meet and chat with during your gym sessions.

You can also join offline workshops or courses in different life skills where you get the opportunity to meet different people and interact with them.

#4. Keeping up with finances and taxes

How you will raise enough money to fund your “making money on the road” is a question that you will have to deal with when stepping into this new working model.

Yes. Because financing a life as a digital nomad can be pretty expensive if you’re not earning enough money.

As a solution, when beginning, you can start by limiting your movements. Secondly, you should find clients who can pay you enough for your skills.

#5. Maintaining a consistent routine

Working from anywhere gives you location independence; however, it comes with a cost.

It may make it harder for you to establish consistent routines in finance roles that help you navigate daily life. At the end of the day? Having an inconsistent routine makes your tasks boring, and you may even get overwhelmed.

This is because most finance tasks, like coming up with a balance sheet, usually require work to be done in one sitting, and if you keep postponing them as you travel, you’ll lose track.

The best strategy to employ here as a solution is to perform daily aspects of life such as time management, task management, socializing, taking care of the household, and running errands in an orderly and consistent manner.

#6. Having access to adequate healthcare

Access to healthcare remains a major challenge for anyone who is always on the road. This is because, in some regions of a country or countries, healthcare regulations may vary, and there is no digital Medicare.

The Covid-19 regulations across different countries from 2020 through today are a perfect example of how fragile healthcare is.

However, as technology and global collaborations continue to expand, it is possible to find healthcare and insurance coverage that is favorable for you in any region or country.

Some of the practical solutions that you can try in order to deal with burnout and improve your overall health are:

  • Socializing
  • Exercising
  • Setting a work routine
  • Separating work and life
  • Taking regular breaks
  • Getting enough sleep

That’s it for the challenges and solutions you can face while working from anywhere in the finance and business industries.

The bottom line here is that, while the above challenges are common among remote workers, they can vary between individuals.

You, therefore, need to address them separately, and coming up with preemptive and effective solutions can save you most of the trouble and help you start or continue living the life you dream of.

The Big Question–How Do I Know If “Work from Anywhere in Finance and Business Careers” is for Me?

Let’s be upfront. Working from anywhere is here to stay. Why?

Companies all over the world have realized that physically being at the office full-time isn’t necessary to produce great results—finance and business firms are not left out.

But is this something for you?

It’s exciting to work from a tropical beach, enjoying the breeze and a night in an AirBnB, but can you handle it?

Have you made up your mind to pursue what you want by not conforming to the status quo?

Working from anywhere in finance and business careers is not for everyone; it’s for an integrated person who:

  • Owns the responsibility for their life
  • Wants to explore and grow as a human being
  • Evolves beyond the known
  • Takes the risks that life brings
  • Is ready to jump into the unknown
work from anywhere not for everyone

Truth be told, you need to do a lot of soul-searching before you can start working from anywhere, especially in the finance and business industries.

Imagine staying in the U.S. but working as a personal financial assistant to an individual in Japan: the time zone difference, language barrier, and different economic zones.

It can be challenging, but it is possible and quite rewarding compared to the conventional way of working from the office, as explained in this guide.

As a solution, in this section, I’ll introduce you to something that will excite you even as you look forward to exploring new possibilities of working from anywhere.

It’s about exploring your Inner GPS. If you’re hearing this term for the first time, Inner GPS is a powerful tool built-in to help you understand positive and negative intuitive signals in your life.

You need to activate your Inner GPS in order to explore the possibilities, opportunities, and readiness to face the challenges of this way of living life—as a remote worker in finance and business careers.

It’s intriguing, isn’t it?

Let’s move to the next section.

Essential Skills for “Work from Anywhere” Finance and Business Professionals

If you ask around, you’ll be told, “Survival is for the fittest.” And the best species (humans) are continuously evolving by training their skills to ultimately dominate their ecosystems (careers).

That’s what it means to work in the finance and business industries—competition for job opportunities is by far the worst; however, if you have a combination of the right skill set, you will be guaranteed success.

And it’s not just about professional skills; there is more. Sometimes, it comes with a few compromises and trade-offs. Let’s dig deep.

#1. Professional skills

Work from anywhere professional skills

1. Ability to work independently

Working remotely calls for you to be resourceful and problem-solve on your own. For instance, being able to evaluate financial expenditures and meet deadlines without unnecessary follow-ups from your employer or supervisor or professionally handling your clients if you are an entrepreneur.

2. Self-motivation

In just about any financial role, deadlines need to be respected. That’s why you need to be able to create your own schedule and routine, which can keep you focused and on task, but it’s also important to limit distractions.

3. Strong written communication skills

Poor communication and a lack of message clarity waste time and cause frustration among staff. That’s why you need to be effective at written communication, be it those emails you send to your clients, budgets, or profit margins for your company. Good communication can also enable you to create and negotiate deals that can help you advance your career.

4. Comfort with learning and using digital tools

Remote collaboration requires extensive use of online and digital resources. That’s why you need to be comfortable with project management programs, video meeting software, and company-specific digital platforms.

5. Team player mindset with cross-cultural literacy

Have you thought about being accountable in a conventional work environment? The same is true when working from anywhere. While you’re enjoying your privacy, you need to be sure to respect and uphold the cultural diversity of your colleagues.

6. Reliable and secure equipment

Integrity is key—especially that of your work tools and data. Don’t imagine being reckless and exposing your work information to external parties who’re not supposed to have it.

7. Emotional intelligence

A traditional work environment allows you to read non-verbal cues from your colleagues. The opposite is true in a virtual work environment. That’s why you need high emotional intelligence (EQ) that helps you solve problems, resolve conflicts, and truly listen to your colleagues without prejudice.

#2. Life skills

You need life skills in order to have a positive and adaptive approach to everyday life, both at work and in private life, while working from anywhere.

Work from anywhere life skills

You need life skills in order to have a positive and adaptive approach to everyday life, both at work and in private life, while working from anywhere.

1. Daily chores

They’re as essential as the willingness and ability to cook, haircut, beard trim, wash clothes, clean dishes, do household chores, and buy groceries in a minimalist setup.

2. Multiple skills

As a single person, you must have all the skills. If you have a partner or the freedom to choose one, then choose one who is physically, mentally, emotionally, sexually, and spiritually aligned with your energy and has multiple skills.

3. Complementary skills

You and your partner should have valuable skills with which to serve. Either you can have complementary skills or the same skills. Do this before giving birth to children, or consciously decide not to give birth, if you want to make this model successful.

4. Reason to travel

Find out your reasons for visiting and staying in different places. Ensure you travel light- minimalist and simple living—with 4-6 bags. This is more about going into the unknown for adventure and exploration during your time for personal growth.

5. Online research skills

You need to have online research skills for visiting places, deciding on stays, taxi/ cab booking, flight booking, Google Maps, Google Earth, and weather checking.

6. Digital income

On top of that, you should consider having 90% of your income come from digital income sources.

7. Peace and privacy

Your focus should be on peace and privacy. Least communication with family, friends, relatives, and the world in general, because they will discourage your new adventurous life.

In 1986, the World Health Organization (WHO), in the Ottawa Charter, identified life skills as the following:

  • Empathy
  • Creative thinking
  • Decision-making
  • Self-awareness
  • Managing emotions
  • Stress management
  • Effective communication
  • Effective relationships

Income Generating Opportunities for “Work from Anywhere- Finance and Business Careers”

Income generating opportunities

Working from anywhere presents you with multiple opportunities to generate income. However, in this article, I’ll limit myself to two pretty straightforward options for you.

The first option is to do a job remotely regularly, and another option is to create a career. What’s the difference, and which one is better than the other? Let’s see.

#1. Working remotely

Working remotely typically refers to performing a job or tasks remotely, often as an employee or freelancer, for a specific company or organization.

Here are specific examples of roles you can take on while working remotely.

According to industry studies, estimates suggest that there are over 1.57 billion freelancers in the world as of 2023, and 73.3 million of them are from the U.S.A.

The same study suggests that the worldwide freelance market is estimated to be worth $1.5 trillion and is increasing at a CAGR of 15%.

In this case, you have the flexibility to work from any location as long as you have an internet connection; however, you’re bound by the guidelines, deadlines, and requirements set by your employers.

#2. Creating a career

On the other hand, creating a career involves building your own business, brand, or professional path. It often entails developing specialized skills, pursuing personal passions, and taking the initiative to establish yourself in a specific industry or field as an expert or thought leader.

According to World Bank data, 46.4% of all workers worldwide are self-employed. Which can loosely be translated to mean, people creating their own careers.

This can involve pursuing things such as:

According to the latest data, there are 207 million people who are considered “creators” in a professional sense.

Creating a career offers greater autonomy and the opportunity to shape one’s work according to personal goals and values. It requires self-motivation, entrepreneurial spirit, and a willingness to take risks.

Both options provide the freedom to work from anywhere; the ultimate choice is vested in you. Which role excites you? More in the next section.
