A Siddha Discourse on the Stages of Ego Dissolution in the Kundalini Awakening Journey
Awakening Through the Darkness
The dark night of the soul is not just a poetic phrase or philosophical metaphor. It is a lived, internal passage—a deeply transformative part of the spiritual journey. If you are walking the path of Kundalini awakening or experiencing the deeper currents of spiritual growth, you may encounter this phase when everything begins to fall apart. But what is falling apart is not your life—it is your ego.
This phase initiates the death of the ego. It does not unfold in a single moment, nor in a fixed order. It may span months, years, or even decades. The length and intensity depend upon your unresolved karmas, the energetic imprints carried over from countless lifetimes, and how strongly you are attached to your false identities.
This transformation can be compared to the metamorphosis of a larva becoming a butterfly. The larva has no knowledge of the sky it is destined to fly in. Similarly, your ego cannot fathom the vastness of your true nature. But for the butterfly to emerge, the larva must dissolve. And for consciousness to rise, the ego must die.
Read This from Your Consciousness, Not Your Personality
This is not a text to be read casually or with intellectual curiosity. It is a transmission of truth that can only be grasped through the stillness of your consciousness—not through the mind, not through ego, and not through personality.
Take a moment before you continue reading. Let yourself settle into your body and awareness. Follow this brief instruction to become energetically present:
- Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing the breath to expand your chest.
- Exhale completely, feeling the release through your entire body.
- Repeat this for two more rounds.
Let the breath create a space within you. Let your attention drop from mental chatter into a place of inner receptivity. From here, allow yourself to read with your whole being, not just your eyes.
The Seven Stages of Ego Death
There are seven major stages through which the ego dissolves during the dark night of the soul. These stages are not chronological, as Kundalini energy moves in spirals. She may rise to higher chakras and later return to cleanse the lower ones. However, for the sake of clarity, these stages are described through the lens of chakra intelligence.
1. Root Chakra: Ego of Survival
At the root chakra, the ego identifies itself with the instinct to survive—securing food, shelter, and basic safety. This is the most primal identity. The fear of not surviving, of losing one’s place in the world, dominates every thought.
Kundalini begins here by shaking the foundations of this fear. She pushes you beyond your comfort zones, into uncertainty and the unknown. If you resist, if you cling to control and predictability, this stage becomes painful. But when you let go, the ego begins to dissolve, and something deeper takes root.
2. Sacral Chakra: Ego of Roles and Emotional Attachments
Here, the ego is deeply enmeshed in the psychological identities created through relationships—father, mother, partner, child, friend, employee, citizen, artist. The ego believes, “I am this role,” and forms deep emotional attachments around it.
During the dark night, Kundalini begins to burn away these identifications. The roles start to fall apart, and the emotional entanglements unravel. You may feel abandoned or irrelevant. But it is not rejection—it is release. She is removing the illusion that you are any role. You are none. You are that which observes all roles.
3. Solar Plexus: Ego of Power, Control, and Ambition
At the solar plexus, the ego identifies with success, status, goals, and control. It defines itself through achievement, financial growth, legacy, and dreams of the future. The belief here is, “I am what I do. I am what I accomplish.”
Kundalini confronts this illusion directly. You may experience sudden loss of success, financial decline, or the collapse of long-held dreams. This is not destruction—it is purification. Everything built from ego must be torn down, so that your actions may arise from soul, not ambition.
4. Heart Chakra: Ego of the “Good Person”
This stage is subtle and difficult to detect. Here, the ego hides under the mask of virtue. You may believe yourself to be a “nice guy,” a “kind soul,” someone who is always there for others—even if it costs your peace or truth.
Kundalini does not support this form of martyrdom. She teaches that compassion without self-love is false. The dark night at this level brings situations where your “goodness” is questioned, rejected, or misunderstood. She is burning the ego that seeks approval through sacrifice. You are not here to be liked—you are here to be free.
5. Throat Chakra: Ego of Suppression and Approval-Seeking
At the throat chakra, the ego becomes the pleaser. You hide your truth. You speak to be accepted, not to be real. You silence your needs for the sake of peace. Here, the ego whispers, “If I speak my truth, I will be rejected.”
Kundalini forces the voice to rise. In the dark night, you will feel the unbearable weight of suppression. You may even lose your ability to remain silent. Old patterns of lying, pleasing, and concealing your truth begin to fall apart. What emerges is an authentic voice that no longer fears disapproval.
6. Third Eye: Ego of the Thinker and the Intellectual
Here, the ego attaches to thought itself. It believes in its logic, its plans, its knowledge. It identifies as the one who “knows”—a wise person, a spiritual person, a thinker. You are guided not by inner knowing, but by the conditioned mind.
Kundalini crushes the illusions born from thought. She introduces repeated failures of mental plans. Nothing works. Everything crumbles. The mind is forced into surrender. Here, you are broken open to intuition—true sight beyond logic.
7. Crown Chakra: Ego of the Spiritual Identity
This is the most concealed ego—your entire personality, spiritual persona, beliefs, and even the image you hold of yourself as a “seeker,” “healer,” “teacher,” or “lightworker.” All of these are still roles of ego.
Kundalini tears through these with silence. Everything collapses. You do not know who you are anymore. You no longer fit anywhere. You are no longer “someone.” You have no ground left to stand on, no identity left to preserve.
This is the darkest moment—and yet, the closest to light.
Why the Night Feels Dark
The dark night of the soul is not dark in truth. It is only dark to the ego that resists. The fear, the pain, the confusion—it all comes from holding on. When you let go, when you surrender, there is no darkness. There is only stillness.
This is not punishment. It is purification.
