The Mystery of Kundalini’s Energy

From where does Kundalini get the energy to change you?

This is a great question, because Kundalini itself is invisible. You cannot see it, yet from the very day it awakens in you, you begin to experience extreme transformation. That transformation continues throughout your life. So the question arises: from where is Kundalini generating so much energy? From where is she drawing this immense power to transform your body, your mind, and your very existence?

You must understand this not just through intellectual reasoning but through experience. If you have gone through Kundalini awakening, and if you have noticed the depletion of energy in yourself during the process, then it will be easier for you to grasp this truth directly.

A Simple Experiment With Breath

Right now, let me invite you into a small experiment. It has no side effects, but it will immediately give you an experiential taste of what I am sharing.

Sit calmly. Inhale deeply, exhale fully, and then hold your breath. Do not release until your body strongly demands that you breathe again. Hold for five, ten, fifteen seconds, or even thirty seconds—until you reach that point where the body insists on air.

What happened when you held the breath? Immediately your body went into a state of deprivation—deprivation of oxygen, deprivation of prana. At the same time, the carbon dioxide in your body began to increase.

Our body is not designed to tolerate high levels of carbon dioxide without exchanging it for oxygen. Excess CO₂ creates acidity and leads to many health issues. Normally, the body maintains balance: oxygen in, carbon dioxide out. But when you stop inhaling, you cut off the fresh supply of oxygen—the supply that comes charged with pranic content.

The body can allow a breath-hold only up to a certain extent, managed by the respiratory centers in the brain. Beyond that point, survival instinct activates. The respiratory center forces the body to breathe again because oxygen is life, prana is life. Without it, survival is impossible.

Now imagine this same principle playing out not only in a few seconds of holding the breath, but across years of living in a subtle freeze mode. If your body remains in freeze for years or decades, it means prana absorption in your system has been chronically low. This is often the hidden background of why Kundalini energy awakens and begins its transformation: she must reclaim, reorganize, and redistribute energy that has been locked or frozen for too long.

The Biological and Energetic Source of Kundalini’s Fuel

On the physical level, if oxygen is not absorbed by the cells, then cells fail to receive the nutrition, oxygen, and water required for energy production. One dysfunction leads to another, and the cycle continues.

From this very cycle Kundalini begins her work. She extracts prana from your body, from your energy channels, and burns it in a process that transforms raw life force into higher energy. The substance most central to this is called ojas.

Ojas – The Protective Fuel

Ojas is the refined end-product of all the biological and energetic processes in your system: digestion, assimilation, absorption, transformation, and creation of new cells and tissues. Just as clarified butter (ghee) is produced after the churning of milk, ojas is produced after the subtle churning of all the life processes.

Physically you may think of ojas like the cell wall protecting a cell, though it is not a physical substance. Energetically, it is the invisible protective layer of the body, rich with electrical charge. This ojas is Kundalini’s original fuel, her clarified butter.

If you are going through Kundalini awakening and your ojas is low, transformation will be difficult. That is why clarified butter itself—ghee—is often recommended, because it supports the production of high-quality ojas. Yet simply eating ghee is not enough. The quality of ojas depends on many factors: how you eat, how you digest, how you breathe, how you live.

So Kundalini draws her energy from ojas. But she also uses every aspect of your life process: the food you eat, the water you drink, the air you breathe, the environment you live in.

The Role of Food, Water, and Breath

Whatever food you eat, if it is conscious and filled with high nutrition, it produces the best quality ojas. Whatever water you drink, if it is clean and abundant, it lubricates the energy channels, allowing Kundalini to flow.

On the level of cellular respiration, glucose (from food) combines with oxygen (from breath) to produce energy, water, and carbon dioxide. Similarly, on the energetic level, Kundalini burns ojas in the presence of prana to produce tejas—inner fire. That fire becomes the push, the rocket fuel, that propels Kundalini upward through the central channel.

The Combustion of Prana and Ojas

The five types of prana—prana, apana, samana, vyana, and udana—all play a role.

In the solar plexus region, Kundalini squeezes the body, especially the gut area, while the breath is held (a natural kumbhaka). This creates pressure, causing prana and ojas to ignite together. That ignition produces tejas, the fire that fuels transformation.

Think of a rocket. Fire is ignited at the base, creating pressure against gravity. The equal and opposite reaction pushes the rocket upward into space. In the same way, the combustion of ojas and prana creates pressure at the root and sacral chakras. This pressure launches Kundalini upward through the spine.

This upward force, however, also generates heat. That heat travels through the body, sometimes creating inflammation, discomfort, or even illness. In Kundalini awakening, many physical, mental, and energetic symptoms arise from this very combustion.

When prana is insufficient, apana dominates, creating a smoky condition in the energy field. Just as burning wood releases smoke, burning ojas without enough oxygen creates energetic cloudiness, leading to brain fog or disorientation.

So Kundalini uses all the prana in the system, combining it with ojas, to ascend. Every cell in the body becomes part of this combustion process, every ounce of energy is reclaimed for her ascent.

The Role of Environment and Nature

But is this the only source of energy for Kundalini? No. She also draws from the environment.

When you are in a closed room, with little fresh air, the oxygen supply is quickly used up. The body becomes exhausted because the combustion of Kundalini has consumed all available oxygen. The room fills with toxicity, and you feel drained.

By contrast, when you are in nature—in forests, mountains, and pranic spaces—trees supply oxygen that is rich with prana. This becomes the most useful fuel for Kundalini.

High mountains like the Himalayas, the Alps, or any ancient mountain ranges are reservoirs of prana. There the air is pure, the environment is undisturbed, the sun energy is direct. Sunlight itself is cosmic prana, the highest source of energy. Kundalini thrives on this.

Water from sacred rivers like the Ganga, flowing from the Himalayan glaciers, carries high electrical charge. Meditating beside such rivers, under the guidance of a guru, supplies Kundalini with an extraordinary quality of energy.

This is why in the Himalayan tradition, seekers are sent to forests, mountains, and rivers for advanced sadhana. The environment itself becomes the supplier of Kundalini’s fuel.

The Guru’s Role in Kundalini’s Ascent

Yet even with all this energy, Kundalini cannot complete her journey alone. After the heart chakra, she cannot move upward without the pull of the Guru.

The Guru embodies both Shiva and Shakti, the universal powers. Only the Guru can draw Kundalini from the limited self into the vast universal consciousness. Without the Guru’s intervention, Kundalini may remain stuck.

This is why the energy of the Guru is itself one of Kundalini’s fuels. The Guru provides the final pull, the bridge between the individual self and the universal self.

The Final Ingredient: Semen Retention

There is still one more source of Kundalini’s energy: semen retention.

Semen is not just a physical fluid; it is condensed life force. When retained, its energy is transmuted into bioelectrical charge. This charge is reabsorbed into the nervous system, rewiring the brain and strengthening the pathways through which Kundalini flows.

Without this conservation and transmutation of sexual energy, Kundalini’s ascent is weakened. With it, the nervous system is rebuilt in such a way that universal forces can be downloaded into the body.

Thus Kundalini requires three main fuels:

  1. Prana – life force absorbed through breath, food, water, and environment.
  2. The Guru’s energy – the universal pull beyond the heart.
  3. Semen retention – the conservation and transmutation of life essence.

Transformation into the Phoenix

When Kundalini works with these fuels, she rewires the nervous system, dissolves old neural pathways, and creates new ones. She burns away the old self and births a new self.

Like the mythical phoenix, you rise from your own ashes. The old you is dead, and the new you is born through Kundalini’s fire.

This is the very essence of transformation. Without prana, Kundalini cannot move. Without the Guru, she cannot ascend fully. Without semen retention, she lacks the final intensity of fuel. Together, these three create a complete transformation.

The old dies, the new is born. You become the phoenix.

Conclusion: The Complete Answer

So from where does Kundalini get the energy to change you?

She takes it from every aspect of your being—your breath, your food, your water, your environment, your mind, your body, your sexual essence. She reclaims the scattered energies of your thoughts, emotions, and memories. She reclaims the frozen energies of your trauma and karmas. She draws from nature, from the sun, from the rivers, and finally from the Guru.

All this becomes her fuel. All this becomes her fire. And with it, she transforms you into a new being—radiant, free, and reborn.
